GVP’s volunteer needs fluctuate. Our list of typical volunteer positions is below, but the most up-to-date information about current opportunities will be available at New Volunteer Orientation. To get started, submit our online volunteer application form. As a school, the vast majority of our volunteer needs fall between the hours of 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Opportunities on weekends are rare. These opportunities are also available during the academic year only. All direct service opportunities with students will allow volunteer to work directly with refugee girls age 11-18 who are English language learners and are learning K-8 curriculum.

Afternoon Study Hall Tutor

Tutor will help students complete their homework and improve their reading, math and writing skills. Tutor will also assist students with independent work, one-on-one or in small groups. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 3:35-4:25 PM. Tutor must commit to at least one day each week for a full 50-minute session.

Classroom Assistant

In a class setting, volunteer will participate in whole class discussion and instruction and engage students during break-out sessions in a small group or work one-on-one with students. Volunteer will help students strengthen their skills through curricular units and interactive lessons. Volunteer will also assist lead teacher with classroom management and prepare instructional materials. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on weekdays. Volunteer must select a subject matter listed below and commit to at least one day each week for a full 50-minute session in that subject matter. *Note: Volunteers do not need a degree in education or teaching background to serve as a classroom assistant. Instruction and materials will be provided by our faculty.

English Language Arts (ELA) - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00-9:50 AM and/or 9:55-10:45 AM depending on Form/cohort
Math - Monday-Friday from 9:00-9:50 AM and/or 9:55-10:45 AM
Music - Tuesday from 12:45-1:35 PM, 1:35-2:25 PM, and/or 2:25-3:15 PM
Science - Monday-Friday from 12:45-1:35 PM, 1:35-2:25 PM, and/or 2:25-3:15 PM
Social Studies - Monday-Friday from 12:45-1:35 PM, 1:35-2:25 PM, and/or 2:25-3:15 PM

Front Office Administrative Volunteer

Be the friendly face of GVP for few hours a week! Volunteer will assist the office staff by answering the phone, buzzing in guest as they enter the school, helping volunteers and guests check-in, direct office traffic, and other light administrative assistance (copying, filing, instructional materials prep).  This position provides understanding of the operations of a nonprofit and school and the chance to know GVP staff, faculty, and service members. Opportunity availability: Opportunity availability: August-May on Monday-Friday from 7:30AM-5:00PM. Volunteer must commit to at least one day each week for two or more hours.

Guided Reading Volunteer

Volunteer will participate in small reading groups with about five students to help students strengthen their reading skills by reading books based on assessment levels and possibly engaging students in literacy activities. Volunteer will also assist Guided Reading leaders with group management. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:50-11:40 AM. Volunteer must commit to at least one day each week for one hour.

Guided Math Volunteer

Volunteer will participate in math groups and engage students in math activities. Volunteer will also assist Guided Math leaders with group management. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on Monday and Wednesday from 10:40-11:40 AM. Volunteer must commit to at least one day each week for one hour.

Library Assistant

Volunteer will assist GVP librarians by categorizing and labeling books, helping students check-out/check-in books, and performing other library related tasks. This position provides understanding of the school and library operations and the chance to build relationships with refugee young women, GVP staff, faculty, and service members. Opportunity availability: August-May - days vary and times are between 8:00 AM-1:00 PM. Volunteer is ask to commit to a few days each month for two or more hours. *Weekly schedule is based on volunteer need and GVP librarian availability.

Literacy Workshop Volunteer

Volunteer will provide one-on-one support to student to help strengthen their literacy skills by reading books based on assessment levels and engaging students in literacy activities. Volunteer will also assist Literacy Workshop Volunteer Coordinator with class management. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on Monday from 12:45:1:35 PM, 1:35-2:25 PM, and/or 2:25-3:15 PM.  Volunteer must commit to at least one full 50-minute session each week.

Lunch Supervisor

Volunteer will walk to GVP students to lunch at Agnes Scott College, eat lunch, and supervise students in dining hall, and walk students back to GVP. Volunteer must be willing to follow and enforce lunch procedures and prioritize students’ safety. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them socially, and promote healthy eating and proper dining etiquette. Opportunity availability: August-May on Monday-Friday from 11:40 AM- 12:50 PM. Volunteer must commit to at least one day each week for a full one-hour lunch timeslot.

Morning Study Hall Tutor

Special Events Volunteer

Global Village Project hosts several events each year including our annual community walk in the fall and gala in the spring. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up before events, various duties throughout events, breakdown after events, and more. Opportunity availability: September-April on various days/times. Volunteer must commit to at least one event for two or more hours throughout the school-year.

Specials Volunteer

Volunteer will assist guest instructors to facilitate an enrichment course. Courses vary from year-to-year, but past specials include classes related to fitness, digital media literacy, visual arts, music, and dance. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: August-May on Thursday (subject to change) from 12:45-1:35 PM, 1:35-2:25 PM, and/or 2:25-3:15 PM. Volunteer must commit to at least one full session each week. *Weekly schedule could shift based on arts programing throughout the school-year.

Summer Book Club Volunteer

Volunteer will participate in small reading groups or work one-on-one with students to help strengthen their reading skills. During book club students read books based on their assessment levels and engage in fun theme-based activities and music sessions. Position offers the opportunity to build relationships with refugee young women, mentor them academically, and help with their personal successes and challenges. Opportunity availability: June & July on Tuesday (subject to change) from 4:00-6:00 PM. Volunteer must commit to at least one full session each week.
