Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is a nationwide federally funded community service program for young adults. At GVP, two AmeriCorps members complete an 11-month service at GVP each year by offering individualized service academic support in core programs, including study hall, literacy, STEAM, health and wellness, and summer academic programming. Each full-time member completes a minimum of 1700 hours from September 2022 to July 2023.

This year our service members are Tynese StCyr and Rachel Smith. We are thankful for their presence and the skills they bring to our team. They are patient, compassionate, and have so much care for our girls. They are attentive to students and a strong advocate for their needs.

As Newcomer Teacher Johna Meldau says, “Tynese and Rachel have been invaluable to our class. Their hard work and dedication to supporting teachers across content areas has aided in the success of the class. As a new teacher, I was floored by their abilities to shift between responsibilities, subjects, and students. Both Rachel and Tynese formed special bonds with the girls, offering them a sense of support and friendship that is unique to their role as Americorps volunteers.”

AmeriCorps Service members combine both volunteer and staff member roles. By spending so much time with students in a support role, as opposed to an authoritative role, our Americorps members always have great rapport and relationships with students.

Tynese says about her experience, “An AmeriCorps member here at GVP is a very special role. It’s one of a teacher, an older sibling, a mentor, and a motivator. It has been a beautiful and enriching experience to get to know and love each of our students. This role was challenging and required a lot from me, but at the end of the school year, I emerged as a more patient, loving and humble person. Over the past 11 months, I have built treasured relationships with the students and the staff here at GVP. I’m beyond grateful for my time here and I am blessed to have been a part of this community.”

We are hiring two AmeriCorps service members for the 2022-2023 school year. We have two positions, one focused on literacy and one on STEAM.
