Global Village Project students find a shared language through soccer.

On a makeshift soccer pitch in a Decatur gym, middle schoolers from countries including Afghanistan, Congo, and Sudan speak a shared language.

“Sports and movement are important for all students, but especially important for our students. They have all experienced trauma. As a school, we prioritize being trauma-informed, which involves three things: creating a safe environment, building relationships, and supporting and teaching emotional regulation.”

Mehsod Paw's journey spans the globe. A civil war forced her Burmese family to resettle in a Thai refugee camp. Paw's family moved to the United States when she was 12, and she found company and a family at the Global Village Project.

Decatur middle school serving refugee girls names new CEO and Head of School

Ezell has been part of the Global Village Project community for eight years, first as a volunteer and most recently as director of people and operations. Before joining the nonprofit school, she spent more than 15 years in global leadership at a strategic consulting firm and has extensive experience in human resources, a statement said.
