Intensive English Language & Literacy
At GVP we believe that language is a primary means through which we make sense of the world and learn. Literacy is more than just traditional reading or writing - it includes all the ways one acts in and on the world around texts (oral, written, digital, musical, performative, etc.). This means that language and literacy learning are foundational and fundamental to students’ success.
The Intensive English Language & Literacy program is the core of GVP’s academic curriculum.
Grouping our students together according to academic assessments of language/literacy levels allows us to individualize literacy instruction in every classroom, to every student. We provide support for each student’s literacy growth through technology (online leveled texts, assessments, practice, etc.) and the 120+ volunteers who work with teachers and students each week.
Language and literacy learning get special attention throughout our curriculum in all classes.
We take a content-based approach to teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), which means that students are simultaneously learning subject matter content (math, science, social studies, etc.) and also the academic English language and literacy they will need for high school. For students who have missed years of schooling, this integrated approach is key to helping them catch up to their peers quickly.
At GVP, Intensive English Language & Literacy activities include:
- Daily content-based ESOL classes (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies)
- Daily flexible, small-group Guided Reading classes
- Weekly Playmaking for Girls literacy and drama classes
- Weekly Literacy Workshops with one-on-one tutoring
- A 6-week summer book club for current and graduated students
